I received a grant from Doane University to do research while on a travel course to China. The course was 14 days long, and included the cities of Beijing, Xi’an, and Chengdu.
The topic for my visual research was the role and impact of the government in visual communication, including how it affects self-expression, how the influence of the Chinese Communist Party surfaces in printed communications, and how that might differ from urban to rural areas.
While taking in the culture, food, sights, and attractions, I took photos and made notes on all of the visual media I was surrounded by. Because of the language barrier, more effort was required to discern what was political propaganda and what was just an advertisement. However, the illustrative, or photographic elements usually provided ample evidence as to the message the media was portraying.
All of the information I compiled was then presented in a printed format. This 16 page book was written and designed based on this research.
