Reductive Print

This print was created using one block of pine and BFK Rives paper. Before I started carving the pine block, I printed the background using a rainbow blend of purple, maroon, and pink. I then carved out the tree and printed it by hand with a light brown to achieve a texture that wouldn’t have been successful when using a press. Next, I carved out the details and printed the dark brown over top of the light brown tree, along with the tire swing. One benefit of reductive printing is that it is relatively easy to ensure that all parts of the finished piece line up. However, the series is limited to the first run because once the block is carved into, it cannot be reused for the previous layer. There is some chatter in the print due to the nature of the wood used. Additionally, since the imagery used in the print was natural, the wood grain and chatter that showed up in the finished piece produced an appropriate texture. This print is a part of a series of 15.
