HANDMADE TYPOGRAPHY BOOK

TYPOGRAPHY II

HANDMADE TYPOGRAPHY BOOK
2018
6”x6”
Print, Book Board, Waxed Thread, Natural Components

This handmade book was created in my Doane University Typography II course. Our project was to take an old legend or fairytale, and illustrate it using our typography skills. We were not to use colors, or shapes, only letters and words in various typefaces.
The cover, paper, and binding were also important. We were to consider the content of the book and make the outer components reflect that content. Since I chose a Cherokee tribal legend, the cover and binding reflect nature. I chose to use an accordion fold for the pages, and a coptic stitch for the binding, with a twig as a placeholder on the front cover. These simple methods, together with tea stained paper, conveyed the natural simplicity of the legend.
